"My art is deeply embodied in Afrikan spirituality and nature and it is a way of imprinting the souls of my ancestors on my canvas, for every form of movement is vibration and energies that reside within us and transcends beyond magnitudes of this parallel universe"

“Sometimes when you're in a dark place you think you've been buried but you've actually been planted.” – Christine Caine

My name is Nthabiseng Kekana born on the 7th of March the year 1999, and raised in Alexandra Township by my mother (her only child). I genuinely feel like the toughest question has to be “Tell me about yourself, who are you?” And in that moment one finds oneself in a translucent state and space.

Throughout my life like any another person I had to endure difficult obstacles which could either redefine or let it define oneself. The painful experiences I had to endure brought me closer to God and my Ancestors and I found solace in creating which became a meditational state for me to find and return to thy peaceful and ultimate self.

Hence most of my process work is not seen until finished because this journey of creating has become scared form of practice that oversharing this process is foreign to me. Growing up art or being an artist was not something I did foresee manifesting in my life. One of the main reasons being, I grew up in an environment where art and design careers were spoken of or to us. I started drawing in in my early primary school years and later on went to the National School of the Arts one of the most prestigious art schools in South Africa studying Three Dimensional Design.

After graduating I entered the LISOF (Fashion Design institute) #MyFashionCareer bursary competition and came 1st runner up. I ended up studying for a higher certificate at the school but due to financial reasons I had to drop out though at some point drive for pursuing this career was fading. Later that year after months of soul searching at home, I applied to study Digital Media in Design at the University of Johannesburg for the coming year.

I am a qualified Digital Designer but for now I try to constantly create and share an extension of myself to the world for this gift that was bestowed to me. It is not for me to keep alone but for Me to become a vessel of healing to others who receive it.

My Journey of self-returning and self-becoming continues.

Listen to the wisdom of trees, for trees know that you can be still and grow.. at the same time” - Anonymous

Who lives within? We often find ourselves stemming through life like decaying trees continuously neglecting and devouring our roots from ourselves yet those roots that form part of our lineage remain intact awaiting us to awaken our ‘ultimate selfʼ. This series ‘Dipuo le Badimoʼ came to me In different forms of communication. I dreamt conversing With Unfamiliar Yet so knowing spirits (forefathers), I had visions of different faces and phases, frequently speaking to myself and consciously asking questions to my ancestors which inevitably formed the structure of these works.

When one finds thyself in solitude that is when one feels more interconnected not only to thyself What a divine force within, there is a magnetic energy that vibrate around us in our everyday presence. We disconnect with the physical realm and connect with higher beings (Ancestors) that guide us to the path of a ascension for all the answers one seeks, we receive through transmissions of frequencies which are our spiritual conversations brought forth subconsciously Or consciously by spirit. And through time the truth of this formless eternal nature which is our true essence is unveiled to us for we all are constantly in a state of self-renewal, unearthing truths that were buried under hypnotic spells.

This series is dear to my heart for I am going through a journey of awakening, constantly seeking for truth! Yearning to know and learn for a deeper understanding of our purpose in this universe. And in this path one does inevitably feel alienated and it is through these moments I converse with my ancestors asking for guidance, comfort and wisdom for I am an integral extension of them.

Never apart from them for they are always a part of me silently and lovingly accompanying me in this phase of life living. PS. please note that I continuously emphasize RAturn instead of return because the RA is derived from the Egyptian god Ra (Amun-Ra) god of the sun. So we RAturn to the source of creation the soul of the universe which is God.

The lucky number 7

There are only 7 bodies of works in this series.

I discovered that during this process of creating these artworks I was in a state of seeking truth and understanding and nor did I know how much of a spiritual number it was until my research and at that moment everything started to make sense. The seven colours of the rainbow, the seven days of the week, every colour and everyday is synchronized in creation so it made sense, for I to go no further this number was an answer or sign of completeness for these questions and thoughts I subconsciously asked. Those answers I sought were in the manifestation of being materialized through time particularly of my spiritual relationship with my ancestors and the creator. The seven days of the week remain the same in terms of no other 8th day will be added. But each day brings a new meaning to life is the same way that through these seven artworks conversing with my ancestors the talks have to be decoded to connotatively bring deeper understanding to life.

Nthabiseng used different mediums of materials in this series. One of the main reasons for this is that spirits do not speak a human language so therefore she wanted these pieces to converse with us through natural fibres that metaphorically symbolise or resonate with our soul. She used Jax Raffia col which is a soft fibre made from segments of leaves on the Palmyra palm tree; this biodegradable fibre metaphorically symbolises oneʼs roots for we are all part of the tree. And its roots enriched to deep within the soil are our ancestors launching from below to above within us. The gold in the works emanates ones frequency ‘the golden sunʼ the provider of life and ultimately death.

Collaboration with Art Form Factory

Undiscovered Canvas collaborated with Art Form Factory to create a unique and customized frame for the 7 art pieces in "Dipuo le Badimo" series. Art Form Factory created a house whereby each art piece sits in a glass float, a new age technique of displaying art or photographs in between two sheets of glazed glass to give a floating effect. The portrait is lined with thin gold matte board finish to draw attention to the center piece. The gold leaf of the art as well as the matte board is complimented by a brush gold powder coated contemporary aluminum box frame.
