'Lady Liberty' (2020) is a photo series by Lesego Seoketsa that references The Statue of Liberty in relation to black identity, more specifically black women. Historically, Lady Liberty was believed to be a black woman; However, when France gifted the USA with the statue she has since been appropriated as a white woman.
The Statue of Liberty symbolised freedom and the abolition of slavery, yet the irony is that the USA built its economy with slavery as its foundation. Seoketsa asks what liberty means for black women living in the world today. Existing in a patriarchal and racist society means that liberty has its limitations. 'Lady Liberty' attempts to address the realities that black women experience whilst on the quest to liberation.
