Lady Liberty is a portraiture series which references The Statue of Liberty and acknowledges its origins. Lady Liberty is historically said to be a black woman. I have therefore embodied her character to explore the topics of black women liberation in modern society. There are sub-topics shown through symbolism such as black face and intersectionality in feminism.

The Statue of Liberty symbolised freedom and the abolition of slavery, yet the irony is that the USA built its economy with slavery as the foundation. Enslaved people were shipped from Africa, yet the 7 pointed crown symbolises freedom for all continents. There is also the white-washing of Lady Liberty, which adds another reason as to how its meaning has been drastically changed for the benefit of white Americans. In learning these things about the symbolism and history of the statue, I felt inspired to create Lady Liberty, with the intention of finding out what it means to be a black woman who is free in our society.
