One of my favorite childhood memories from growing up in a village is seeing women carry firewood on their head. It was fast for me as a young boy. Seeing how they would balance the bundle of sticks and carry the weight. With to me as a kid seemed to be with so much ease, control and grace. A lot of Grace. I had never seen them use their hands to balance the load. There was an instinct to maneuver the head to a certain side so the wood doesn’t fall off.
The flowers on the head in the Ama series are very reminiscent of that. But I thought of how, in retrospect. The load the carried wasn’t that light. But they did so with Grace. And to me it seemed to be done with ease. And I re-imagined that weight as a flower crown. A nod to those women, to the women in my life. The ones I know by name and ones who’s names I will never know. Who are the reason I get to be here. Who wear heavy crowns with ease to the outside world.
