“Ndizalwe Nge ngubo emhlophe”| I was born wrapped in a white blanket series produced in Antibes, France during the Undiscovered Art Residency
Lulama Wolf’s introduction to elaborate expressionist techniques in Antibes during her residency consequently evolved her signature eye… This period of self-examination, and exposure to artistic cultural differences, heightened a sense of protectiveness and understanding of her Black Spiritual identity. Wolf also studied textile techniques, particularly ways to preserve canvas and cloth; her painted canvases often expose raw woven materials. This in turn can further suggest the spiritual message of the "Ndizalwe Nge ngubo emhlophe (I was born wrapped in a white blanket)" proverb. Themes of healing and rest are not only referenced through her languid figurative compositions but through the intentional purity and simplicity of the works, formed from the earth through woven linen and painted soil.
